End of the year strategies (from Feb. 2009)

A heavy emphasis at Tournament Time, is on shot finishes, short offense/defense, and chain wrestling. Practices should involve lots of situation wrestling from the following key positions:

Single leg up: Start with the leg in the middle and go live.

Single leg on the mat: One wrestler has the leg and is on a knee.

Split the middle.

Hi Crotch position.

Front Headlock position.

Down position, leg in.

Teach athletes how to win from key positions that their opponents will put them in. Standing single is a perfect example. The opponent will do one of a few main things most of the time: He will fight hands and whizzer, force the head down, force the head away, or put his leg on the outside. Drill finishes from each option, then have the partner randomly put him in different positions, and offensive wrestler has to execute the right finish for the situation. Its a good drill to do from each of the positions mentioned above. Then, go live from the same situation.

Some Coaching Strategy: Coaches - you know your athletes' strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to get them wrestling from their strengths as much as possible, for best results. Have a takedown wrestler? Try to keep him on his feet. Good leg man? Don't be afraid to put him on top. Good Luck in the coming weeks, with the end of season championships!
