Teaching Shot Finishes (From Jan. 2010)

At this point in the season, you have hopefully installed your offense - including handfighting system, set-ups, and leg attacks. These areas usually take precedence early on, as they should. At this point in the season, we emphasize a couple key areas: 1. Finishes 2. Situation Wrestling. These two often go hand in hand, of course. Let's cover Finishes for now.

We will now spend time putting our athletes in numerous leg attack positions, and giving them different looks from the opponent. This includes being in on a shot (high crotch or single, for instance), and opponent sprawling; high crotch position, and opponent sits and scoots (aka crackdown); high crotch position, and the opponent leans over and reaches for ankles; single leg position, opponent squares up (split the middle position); single leg position, opponent pushes the head down and spins; single leg up, opponent fights hands, pushes the head away, smashes the head down, or puts the leg to the outside; and double leg, opponent grabs ankles and locks in the crotch.

I would work an area, and specific leg attack, at a time, to start with. For instance, we're in on a single on the mat, and the opponent does one of three things: 1 . Sprawls and stretches us out; 2. Squares up; 3. Smashes the head down and spins. Handle each of these three reactions one at a time, then speed drill it. Once your athletes have it down, move to the next one. Once they have all three of them down, now you do a reaction drill. Wrestler hits single, opponent gives them one of those 3 reactions, Wrestler executes the correct finish.

The next day, you might take another position, such as high crotch on the mat. First, go back to the single position again - speed drill each finish one at a time, then come back to the reaction drill. Then move on the the high crotch position, follow the routine from the previous day.

The following day might be the single leg up position. You know the routine now. By the end of the week (depending on how many days you have in the week), you might have your finishes series in. Then you can go down the line, speed drill the first position, do reaction drill for that position, go to the next position, same routine, etc, hopefully in a fairly timely fashion.

This month's Wrestlers' Newsletter handles the high crotch position and a few finishes from there. You can always check out the Wrestlers' Newsletter by looking at the Latest Newsletter, in PDF form.
