Spring Training (from March 2009) |

As the spring starts, you will want your athletes to do a few things: first of all, get them in the weight room and in a good strength training program. This is the time to start bulk workouts to put on muscle mass. As for wrestling - I always encourage freestyle and greco at this time of year. Freestyle and Greco expand athletes' horizons and greatly enhance their athleticism by improving on hip and body movement, as well as providing for a sort of cross training in wrestling.
Athletes who are doing folkstyle should try to learn new techniques and try things. And by all means, have them show you what they've learned (hopefully they will show it the way they saw it!). This is the time to encourage your athletes to try new things in competition. Those who are trying to learn legs - now is the time to let them try it, even if they get in trouble with it. Remember, these matches don't count!
Also, don't let them cut weight unless they are going to one of the really big tournaments, such as Senior Nationals or Fargo. None of the others are important enough to cut weight for.
Hopefully, your athletes will stay busy in the spring and continue to improve in all aspects of the sport.
