Top Position: Stopping the First Move
Stopping first moves is an essential skill for riding opponents. Don't plan to just out-quick your opponent - your odds are only about 50/50 of being quicker than him. Instead, use the following well-tested techniques to block their first move so you can go on the offense from there.
First rule, be sure you get pressure on them from the start. A good Bump is essential for stopping a first move. In addition, we use two techniques to stop their initial move:
1. Pinch ankles with our knees.
2. Double thigh block.
When you pinch the ankles, you stop their stand-up cold in its tracks. They also can't sit out easily because they can't move their feet. Remember to drive forward, getting off your knees as you do this - so they don't jam you and knock you backward.
When we Double thigh block, we bring both arms inside the thigh, rather than one, which we do when we run the spiral. The Double thigh block stops their hips on both sides. I can also go right into the spiral series from here.
