Coaches: Fall Training for your athletes
To me, the ultimate Fall Training regimen for athletes accomplishes the following:
Feet: Motion, positioning (includes penetration, level changing), hand-fighting. Learn/reinforce essential skills on the feet including head-fighting skills (head position, countering opponent's attack on your head), leg attacks and counters. Motion on counters is especially important and very underrated.
Down: Essential down skills: positioning, hand-fighting, hip motion such as knee slides, hip heists, granby, essential counter skills.
Top: Fundamentals such as pressure & control (legs, getting wrists, etc.), lockdown technique, Returns.
While it may seem like a lot for the fall, remember - this is what the elite guys do. To me, stressing the above skills is more important than live wrestling - also live wrestling is certainly part of the equation as well. Some fall athletes may be in a position where they shouldn't wrestle live. If the star quarterback is also your 160 lber, we want to do the right thing - don't get him hurt in the fall. Maybe he doesn't participate at all. If he does, he does drills that are safe and low-risk, to enhance his wrestling, but doesn't wrestle live.
You also want your athletes coming into the season in shape. If an athlete is playing soccer or running cross country, conditioning is probably not going to be an issue. If he's in football, then its debatable. Athletes not in a fall sport should be running at least 3-5 times a week, lifting weights, and attending clubs and open mats. Being in a program that emphasizes the skills above, would be the best case scenario.
