The Buckeye Page: Ohio State Wrestling Results

Friday Nov. 20, 7: pm: #3 Ohio State vs #16 Lehigh

Match by Match breakdown:

125: Nikko Triggas (OSU) vs John McDonald (Lehigh). Triggas secures the fall at the 1:10 point of the 3rd period to start the Buckeyes off right. OSU leads, 6-0.

133: Ian Paddock (OSU) vs. No. 12 Matt Fisk (Lehigh). Fisk scores 3 TD's and secures an 8-3 decision for Lehigh. OSU leads 6-3.

141: #1 Reece Humphrey vs #15 Seth Ciasulli (Lehigh). wins convincingly with 3 TD's, 7-1. OSU now leads 9-3.

149 #3 Lance Palmer (4-0) vs Brian Tanen (Lehigh). 1st period: Palmer gets in deep first with a left handed single, countered out. Later on Palmer goes behind for a TD and 2-0 lead. Tanen gets an escape, 2-1.
2nd period: Tanen drops to ankle to ride, Palmer squares up, works behind for a reversal, 4-1. 3rd period, Tanen down. Palmer turns him, get 1 point riding time, 7-1 decision. Ohio State now up 12-3.

157: Tony Jameson (OSU) vs Sean Bilodeau (Lehigh). Jameson's first match of the year. First period, TD Bilodeau, 2-0. Jameson reverses, Bilodeau gets an escape, then jameson gets another TD to lead 4-3. 2nd period is a wild on - Jameson takes him down and secures NF to take a 9-3 lead. 3rd Period, Bilodeau starts on his feet, takes Jameson down to his back to close it to 9-7. Jameson then gets a reversal, 11-7. Late in the match, Bilodeau gets a reversal, locks up a cradle in the fnal 30 seconds and gets 3 NF to win, 12-11. Observation: Tony is more than willing to utilize the funk at any time. He has to learn the when and where, and how to finish matches. He is exciting to watch though, and has a very bright future. OSU now leads 12-6.

165 #8 Colt Sponsellor (OSU) (2-1) vs Brandon Hatchett (Lehigh). First period: 2 leg attack TD's (left handed single) for Sponsellor, 4-1 lead. Sponsellor is being agressive as always - I always like Colt's style - this is good to see out of the Buckeyes. 2nd period, once again working the left handed single, to TD, then Underhook to single, Another left handed single, 4 TD's so far. Love the agressiveness! 10-3 end of 2nd. 3rd period, this time a right handed singe for variety., 12-5 Sponsellor. Hatchett gets in on a single, brings it up, Sponsellor funk rolls on the way down to secure another TD - wow. Now, I hear Coach Ryan calling for Colt to switch to a High Crotch to mix it up - Colt responds, hits one, just as the coach ordered, for another TD, 16-7 now. Sponsellor comes back with an underhook throw-over to a right handed single for another TD for a 19-7 final, and Colt had a cradle locked up at the end. With the major decision, OSU now leads 16-6. Colt is terrific at the Underhook throwover to single, on either side. They can know its coming and still not stop it. He was dominant from behinning to end. His agressive sytle of wrestling epitomizes what Championship wrestling is all about.

174 #15 David Rella (OSU) vs vs Robert Hamlin (Lehigh). (Hamlin is a 3-0 freshman, and was a 4X State Champion in Vermont. First period, 0-0. Not agressive enough. 2nd period, Rella earns hard-fought escape early, that's all, 1-0 going into the 3rd. Very quick 3rd period espcape by Hamlin, 1-1, followed by a ferocious atttack by Rella all the way across the mat but no score. 1-1, we go to OT! No 1st Pd TD...2nd period, Hamlin escapes, 2-1. 3rd period, Rella ties it with an escape with 15 seconds left, 2-2. We go to 4th ot period; Back on our feet. No points, 2nd tiebreaker - Rella goes down, gets an escape in the first 5 or 10 seconds. Hamlin goes down, gets out even faster, 3-3, Hamlin wins on OT criteria (riding time). OSU up 16-9.
Observation: David needs to attack more - put more pressure on the opponent, hand-fight better and attempt more attacks. OSU leads

184 #3 Mike Pucillo (OSU) vs #12 David Craig (Lehigh) 1st period - Pucillo snaps him down, works front headlock hard but doesn't get the TD. Pucillo snaps him down into another left handed front headlock, no TD, but he constantly is going forward, constantly working opponent's head, pressuring his opponent. First period 0-0 2nd period, Pucillo starts down. Pucillo hand-fights hard, comes up and escapes in 9 seconds. That's the way to wrestle on the mat. Craig then gets TD, 2-1, but Pucillo immediately escapes, then, follows it up by constantly attacking, nearly getting a TD. At this point, Craig has been on top twice for a total of 13 seconds riding time. That's some solid down position work by the Buckeyes. More on that later. Pucillo snaps Craig down again but no TD, but stalling call on Craig as he backs off the mat. Pucillo just continues to pursue and pressure constantly. 3rd period, Craig down. Escape Craig, 3-2. Pucillo snaps to another front headlock, doesn't score. This time, a leg attack attempt by Pucillo, gets trapped underneath, then hits a nice peak-out for a TD. Pucillo is now up by one and running crossbody - and he rides it out to win 4-3. OSU now leads 19-9.

197 Cody Magrum (OSU) vs Joe Kennedy (Lehigh). 1st period. No score. 2nd period - Magrum gets out in 10 seconds, 1-0. Its obvious that Ohio State spends a lot of quality time training athletes to escape - they have done well getting out quickly tonight. Magrum hits a knee block off front headlock to secure TD, 3-0.
3rd, period, now 3-1 Magrum - called for stalling - I think that's only the 2nd stalling warning of the night for the Bucks. TD Kennedy, 1 second left, but Magrum has riding time and wins, 4-3. OSU now up 22-9.

285: #16 Corey Morrison (OSU) vs #6 Zach Rey (Lehigh). Rey gets the early TD, 2-1, following Morrison escape. 2nd period: Rey gets an escape in 4 seconds, now 3-1. Rey attacks the leg and turns it into points - now 5-1. Rey is owning Corey at this point. Rey manages to get extra pressure on the opponent before they start by making contact with his hips before the whistle. Escape makes it 5-2 at the end of 2. Start of 3rd. Rey gets a caution from top - still manages to crowd with his hips. Rey cuts him, now 5-3, but actually 6-3 with riding time. Morrison attacks and gets stuck underneath, tries a peak-out, but doesn't score with it. 1:10 to go. Morrison continues to pressure, gets the stall call, now its 5-4 Rey, then TD Morrison on over-under trip, Morrison now leads 6-5 - he can erase riding time and win the match if he rides him out! Morrison rides him out but gets locking hands call which ties it up 6-6! It appears that Morrison erased the riding time, but after a big conference at the head table, it is determined that the locking hands call freezes the riding time clock - meaning Rey still ended up with 1:02 riding time and the extra point. Tough loss for Morrison, 7-6, but great effort staying in the match, battling back to give himself a shot at winning.

Final Score: Ohio State 22 Lehigh 12.

Observations from the match:

The Buckeyes seemed to have spent considerable time working from bottom position - in particular, moving quickly, getting the hips underneath them, and handfighting. Most of the time, the Buckeyes were out in a very short time. I asked Coach Tom Ryan about this after the match. He confirmed that they had spent a lot of time on it. "It was costing us matches, and we couldn't have that." If you observed the Bucks previously, it was a different story. Too much strugglin g to get out. They looked good from this position today.

I saw quite a few Bucks show strong agressiveness: Notably, Humphries, Sponsellor, Jameson. Add Pucillo, who didn't leg attack as often but Mike is constantly pressuring the opponent and creating scoring opportunities. These were strong signs, but others needed to show that type of agressiveness as well. I talked to Lou Roselli, assistant coach, and he felt the same way. David Rella keeps excellent position, and is a physically imposing athlete. He needs to push the action and take more chances. Lou felt that David only took about one or two scoring opportunities. He needs to open them up more.

Conditioning was a factor - in a good way for Ohio State. As assistant coach Joe Heskett said, "Have you ever seen the Buckeyes in this good of condition this early? We looked to be in very good shape." I agree completely, and it was good to see. Keep up the hard work, Buckeyes.
