Way back in the days when we trained out of our Reynoldsburg Home facility (aka, add-on room), a few years before we built the Attack Barn, I worked with a unique wrestler who quickly became a Greco Specialist.

What I mean by that is this:

  • he was an average-at-best high school wrestler (never qualified for the state tournament or even got close, at a tiny division 3 school near Lancaster)
  • he wasn't much of a freestyler either
  • he became a Force To Be Reckoned With in Greco.

Short story long:

This young man (we'll call him “Jon" since that was his name) started doing personal training sessions with me – Greco-only sessions.  I had quickly assessed that he maybe had a knack for greco, and with the right skillset, he could be quite successful.

I trained him to be exceptional at just 3 moves.

He dedicated a significant amount of time perfecting those moves – drilling them over and over again – to a point that I even pulled muscles in my back because of letting him drill one of them so many times.

With just those three moves…

He was able to compete against the top wrestlers in the state – going toe to toe with all of them – beating some while losing in OT to others.

We're talking about state champion level athletes that competed at big, top level programs, like Walsh Jesuit, and St. Edward (among others).

All of a sudden, in Greco, he was among the best in the state.

Jon, with a limited repertoire of just 3 moves, qualified for the Ohio National Team that competes in Fargo, North Dakota.

Some of you have expressed an interest in making your run at the national scene in Greco.  I think its a great idea and I wholeheartedly support it.

With that in mind I announce…

May the 4th Be With You Special Greco Event

This will take place on May 4th

And at this time, it is only available to those in the Elite program.

April 25 Update:  Time for an at times blunt, long overdue discussion about All Things Spring (some of which couldn't be discussed prior to today anyway).

Tournaments

Some of you have been asking me about tournaments.  I finally reached a friend of mine who is on the Advisory Board at USA Wrestling-Ohio (but I don't hold that against him).  He confirmed the following:

  • The Delta qualifier (the one Isaac had planned to compete at) was cancelled.
  • The Lake qualifier was held and it was Packed (good thing the pandemic is over).
  • Other qualifiers will probably take place.
  • Only 14U, 16U and Junior division are competing.
  • To qualify for the 16U and Junior state tournament, you need only attend a qualifier (they have waived the previous placing in Top 6 requirement).  14U doesn't have to qualify to compete in their state meet.
  • Wrestlers can qualify for Fargo by placing high enough in the state meet (exactly how high may still be unclear, and may also be determined by number of entries).
  • Wrestlers might be able to qualify through Central Regionals in Indiana as well (they have wavered on this though).

Singlets

Those of you who purchased singlets – I had to order a few of them. they will be here next week in time for the Carroll Qualifier.

As of now, we will attend May 8 tournament in Dayton Carroll, where all interested wrestlers can compete together as a team.  That would be followed by the state tournament to be held a few weeks later (now scheduled for May 29).

Side note, there is a U14 state championship on May 15 as well.

Again, there are no tournaments in USA Wrestling for the younger kids this year (12U and under).  Part of it is Covid but a lot of it is because USA Wrestling-Ohio is completely terrible at marketing freestyle and greco to younger wrestlers, so the attendance at the younger ages has always been terrible.  Covid is just their current excuse.

Because You Asked….

#1.  “Hey Randy, what about tournaments?

A lot has changed in a long long year.  In the past, we would compete in freestyle tournaments, some of them out of state, to face quality competition.

In fact, competing in tournaments was a big part of our experience in Club Simpson.

And then the pandemic hit.

It wiped out our entire spring club last season, as well as all the tournaments.

This season, we are back in training, but tournaments are up in the air.  In short, the USA Wrestling Ohio needs approval from the National office to conduct tournaments – and as of recently, those tournaments are still listed as “pending".

Its because of that, that I had to approach things differently this season.  So….

while it would be ideal to offer some tournaments to the mix, we will have to see if that happens.  That's why

  •  I don't have a tournament schedule
  • I didn't require USA cards
  • Singlets are optional

About those USA cards.

USA Wrestling provides a great secondary insurance policy for all who have a USA card.  It extends outside of the season, too.  I think the insurance is well worth the price of the card (about $40 last I checked).  But its up to you.  If you want to wait to see if there are tournaments to compete in, you are welcome to do that.  We don't require the card this year.
